When the idea is clear and the hands are not
Many musicians know the experience of hearing a phrase with complete clarity in the mind and then watching it lose its shape somewhere on the way to the instrument. The causes vary from one person to the next, and so do the remedies. For some the work is psychological or emotional, and for others it is far more practical than they expect.
Christopher Prestia spent many hours practising with slow and inconsistent results before he realised that his difficulty lay mostly in the process itself. When he rebuilt his practice around focus, retention, and ease, his own musical voice had room to come through. In this live taping we will look closely at what that rebuilding involved and what it might mean for your own practice.
Three threads we will follow
The conversation will move between Chris's own story and the principles behind The Well-Practiced Musician, the book and course he is currently developing.
I
Focus
How the quality of attention we bring to a practice session shapes what the body actually learns, and why longer hours so often fail to produce steadier results.
II
Retention
Why material that feels secure on Tuesday can vanish by Thursday, and what Chris changed so that progress began to accumulate from one week to the next.
III
Ease
The role of physical and mental ease in expressive playing, and how a practice process designed around it leaves more space for the musician to be heard.

Guest
Christopher Prestia
Chris trained formally in classical organ and church music, and he also plays and teaches violin, cello, and voice. His work as an educator grew out of his own long search for a practice method that respected both the music and the person making it. The Well-Practiced Musician gathers what he has learned into a clear, step-by-step process for musicians who want their effort to translate more faithfully into sound.

Be part of the room
Live tapings have a different quality from edited episodes. You will hear the conversation as it unfolds, and there will be space toward the end for questions from those attending. If something in your own practice has felt stuck, this is a good place to bring it.
